What to expect during your surgery?

After entering the operating room, you will be administered anesthesia to put you to sleep. The anesthesia team will go over all questions you may have regarding anesthesia prior to your surgery. An X-ray is then taken to see a well-defined image of the disc to be replaced. The surgeon will then remove the diseased disc and the disc space is prepared to receive your new artificial disk. The metal endplates of the implant are inserted and tapped into the correct position. As the vertebrae are returned to normal posture, the pressure of the spinal column places the endplates into the vertebral bones and secures the sliding core in position. After the procedure, another X-ray is taken to verify the position and fit of the new disc. The procedure typically takes about 1 hour to complete.

What happens after surgery?

When you wake up you will be in recovery (PACU). The nurses will monitor your vitals and provide medications to control the pain. You may or may not have a drain located in the surgical site (instructions for emptying the drain/removal will be provided via the nursing staff). If you wake up with a drain in place, do not change the dressing until the drain is removed. You will be given a postoperative appointment to have your drain removed in the office.

  • You will be up and walking a few hours after surgery to help reduce the risk of blood clots.
  • Once home, take care of your incision site and protect your neck by returning to activity slowly.
  • Restrictions include limit bending and twisting of the neck and no lifting over 10-15 lbs
  • Wear neck brace once a week when walking
  • Make sure to call your doctor and make any necessary follow-up appointments.
